Scaled model experiment of long-range across-slope pulse propagation in a penetrable wedge.

چکیده
In this paper, laboratory scale measurements of long-range across-slope propagation of broadband pulses in a shallow-water wedge-shaped environment with a sandy bottom are reported. The scaled model was designed to study the three-dimensional (3D) acoustic field in the presence of only a few propagating modes. The recorded time series exhibit prominent 3D effects such as mode shadow zones and multiple mode arrivals. Inspection of the spectral content of the time signals gives evidence of intra-mode interference and frequency dependence of the mode cut-off range in the across-slope direction.

An explicit analytical solution for sound propagation in a three-dimensional penetrable wedge with small apex angle.
A problem of sound propagation in a shallow-water waveguide with a weakly sloping penetrable bottom is considered. The adiabatic mode parabolic equations are used to approximate the solution of the three-dimensional (3D) Helmholtz equation by modal decomposition of the acoustic pressure field. The mode amplitudes satisfy parabolic equations that admit analytical solutions in the special case of...
متن کاملTime-frequency Analysis of Broadband Sound Pulse Propagation in 3-d Oceanic Waveguides
When considering low-frequency sources, the oceanic environment can act as a very dispersive waveguide, especially in shallow-water long-range sound wave propagation. One efficient tool for studying dispersion effects is based on time-frequency (TF) analysis of the received signals using a single receiver [1,2] . However, theses studies only considered two-dimensional (2-D) waveguides. In the p...
متن کاملEffects of oceanic ridge subduction on accretionary wedges: Experimental modeling and marine observations
Sandbox modeling is used to study the deformation of accretionary wedges caused by the subduction of oceanic ridges. The first experiment incorporates a massive ridge within a sand wedge. The wedge thickens and shortens when the forward propagation f the basal decollement ceases. The wedge thickening results in taper change, reactivation of preexisting thrusts, and retreat of the frontal part o...
متن کاملAxisymmetric Scaled Boundary Finite Element Formulation for Wave Propagation in Unbounded Layered Media
Wave propagation in unbounded layered media with a new formulation of Axisymmetric Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (AXI-SBFEM) is derived. Dividing the general three-dimensional unbounded domain into a number of independent two-dimensional ones, the problem could be solved by a significant reduction in required storage and computational time. The equations of the corresponding Axisymmetri...
متن کاملA New Aspect on Wedge Diffraction: Hidden Rays on the Shadow Boundary
The phenomenon of diffraction may be defined by any deviation of geometrical rays from rectilinear paths which cannot be interpreted as reflection and refraction. Although the ascending series solutions to some canonical structures as cylinders, spheres, conducting wedges, etc. are available, they are not directly useful in high frequency region. Those ascending series solutions suffer from ver...
